VERA BELINDA ROBINSON-NEFF June 24, 1913
Vera was born in Trenton Nova Scotia, Canada June 24, 1913 to Lawson
“Dick” and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Dickson. She moved with her family to Derby, Maine when she was
seven years old where her father worked for the Maine railroad. As a young teenager Vera
contracted rheumatic fever, a debilitating illness with complications that left
her housebound for three years. This illness combined with her faith in God
solidified her resolve to continue her education and to help others who were
ill. This she did, going back to school to graduate as salutatorian and
graduating from a grueling nurse’s training with top honors in 1938. After
obtaining her nursing degree, she worked for hospitals in Boston
and New York, later becoming a private nurse
in New York.
She came in contact with many fascinating and interesting people, many of which
were famous. It was also while living in New York
that she became a United
States citizen. Vera had many wonderful
stories of this time. Vera moved to Alaska
with her father and mother in 1946. It was while working at the Elmendorf AFB
in Anchorage
that she met a handsome young staff sergeant named Royce Robinson. They were
soon married on June 6, 1948. Vera homesteaded on their property in Alaska for seven months
while Royce stayed on base through the week, only coming home on the weekends.
Her experiences of homesteading ranged from catching and canning salmon from
the stream next to their home, to protecting their home by shooting a bear that
was breaking down her cabin door. When Vera and Royce left Alaska
they sold this homestead as the first FHA home sold in Alaska. Vera and Royce, like all military
families, were transferred several times but loved Alaska so much they returned every chance
they got to transfer there. They lived in Las
Vegas, Nevada for a
time at Nellis Air Force Base. They were also transferred to Arizona, where Vera worked at an Indian
hospital. Soon after retiring from the service they moved to Idaho to operate a dairy farm. While in Idaho, Vera also worked
at a tuberculosis sanitarium. During these years Vera lovingly took care of
both her parents as she did with so many others. In the 1960s Vera and Royce
moved to Atlanta
where Royce grew up. Vera worked for Atlanta
Memorial Hospital
when it first opened as supervisor of the nurses on the night shift. She also
worked for a time as night shift nurse for Rose Haven Nursing Home, while Royce
worked for the Atlanta
State Park system. Royce
died in 1985 and Vera lived alone until she met and married Lunda Neff of Queen City
in 1989. Lunda had lost his own life’s companion Dolly three years earlier.
Vera instantly became mother to 11 children and their spouses and became a
valued and beloved member of the Neff family. After Lunda’s death in 1994, Vera
continued to be an important part of the lives of his children. She had never
had children of her own, but always said that God had blessed her in her latter
years with 11 children that she could love and share their love in return
without having had to go through the challenges of raising them. She shared in
their achievements and joyous times as well as difficult times and sorrows. She
was preceded in death by her first husband staff sergeant
Royce Robinson of Atlanta and her second husband
Lunda Neff Sr. of Queen
City. She was also
preceded in death by her parents, Lawson and Elizabeth Dickson; two sisters
Margaret “Margie” Coy and Georgia “Dodie” Hoxie; five of Lunda Neff’s children
and one granddaughter, Lunda Jr. in 1972 and his daughter Karen Neff, 22, in
1989, Cecil I in 1992, Larry Sr. in 1996, Billy Sr. in 1998, and Doris Lillie
Mae Weeks in 2006. She is survived by one sister Elva Coy of Huron, Ohio, as
well as several nieces and nephews and her dear friend and cousin, Mada Ray
Gipson of Poplarville, Miss. She is also survived by seven Neff children and
their spouses, David and Phyllis of Phoenix, Ariz., Charles and Donna of
Ashdown, Ark., Lonnie and Kay and Gary and Jo of Atlanta, Linda Laper of Texarkana,
Violet and ‘Steve Helms of Lake Dallas, James and Glenda of Queen City, and a
number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her life she gave aid and
comfort to countless numbers of ailing souls as a nurse and comforter. She also
touched the lives of too many others to mention by her kindness and love. She
will be deeply missed by all, and especially by her children. Memorial services
for Mrs. Neff were held at the Hanner Funeral Service chapel in Atlanta Tuesday, Feb. 5 at
