Surrounded by his loved ones, James Everett Smith peacefully went to Heaven Thursday, Apr. 26, after a battle with cancer and pneumonia.  James was born in Paris to Ben and Ruth Smith.  He graduated from high school and attended Centenary College in Shreveport, La.  He left college to join the Army.  After serving his country, James returned to college but decided that he could use the entrepreneurial skills that he had acquired to make a living.  After courting and falling in love with a beautiful woman he called Polly, he married Pauline Parker Oct. 5, 1947, and enjoyed 59 unbelievable years with her.  James continued to use his strong business skills and bought Nat Hayes locker plant in Atlanta.  He changed the name to Smith’s Frozen Foods and people from miles around had to make appointments to have their animals slaughtered and processed because business was so good.  From this endeavor, James bought cows and a feed lot and continued to operate the locker plant.  James used the resources he had saved and invested in another business called the Atlanta Electric Motor Company.  He opened a miniature golf course in Atlanta and continued to enjoy success as a leading businessman in East Texas.  James then ventured into the building and construction business and developed a subdivision in Atlanta called the Green Hills Addition.  He eventually built the Best Western motel, restaurant and club on Loop 59 in Atlanta.  After James retired, he developed a passion for race horses.  He enjoyed breeding and racing these horses all around the country.  One of hes favorite things was to stand in the winner’s circle surrounded by his family, friends and winning horse.  James is preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Ruth Smith, and one grandson, Clint Self.  James is survived by his wife, Polly, of Atlanta; three daughters and son-in-laws, Teresa and Jack Powell of Shreveport, La., Susan and Wesley Self of Texarkana, Ark., and Nancy and Chuck Rice of Atlanta; five grandchildren, Greg Powell and Amanda Powell of Shreveport, Spider Self of Wake Village, and Sam Rice and Ben Rice of Atlanta; and three great-grandchildren, Sierra, Parker and Austin.  He is also survived by one sister, Virginia Carter of Atlanta; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Buzz and Ernestine Smith of Texarkana and Jerry and Beverly Smith of Stonewall, La.; and many nieces, nephews and family friends.  Services were held at Hanner Funeral Chapel Sunday, Apr. 29, at6 2 p.m. with Wes Chambers officiating.  Burial was in Pine Crest Cemetery under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service.  The guest book may be signed at www.hannerfuneralservice.com. HIXIE LEDELLE CARTER THOMPSON                                 April 15, 1925— Sept. 10, 2007

Hixie Ledelle Carter Thompson joined her Heavenly Father on Monday evening, Sept. 10, 2007. She was 82 years old. Born April 15, 1925, to Mary Francis (Fannie) and Robert Wilson Carter, in Queen City, Ledelle was the youngest of three children. She grew up on her family’s farm in Cass County until moving to “the city” (New Boston) at age 17, where she worked at Hubbard’s Furniture Store and enjoyed life as a young lady during the days of the “Greatest Generation.” She and her friends spent Friday nights at the picture show and Saturdays at the soda fountain. Our nation was at war, and Ledelle eventually set her sights on a young he boy from St. Louis, Mo., named Kenneth Lee Thompson.  On Aug. 14, 1942, a short three months after first spotting him disembarking from a train at Texarkana’s Union Station, the two were married, sending word to her family by way of the milk man. Mr. Carter was none too pleased that his baby girl if would throw in with a “Yankee,” but the family quickly came to love him and call him their own. Thus began a 59-year union that would bring them two beautiful daughters, Margaret Ann, in 1945, and Martha Kay, in 1951, as well as many happy memories and a romance that lasted their lifetime. The two were inseparable and in love until death parted them in 2001, setting an example of true love for all who knew them. Throughout her 82 years on Earth, Ledelle survived cancer and the loss of a child. She was a full-time wife and mother, working occasionally at various retail businesses, including Martin’s Bakery, and Henson-Kickernick. She and Kenneth fully out embraced their retirement years, enjoying frequent travel and a second career in woodcrafts. They were well-known around the craft show circuit and in community churches around the Ark-La-Tex, through Kenneth’s ministry as a visiting preacher. They frequented gospel concerts and loved to go to shows. They were known to “run off” on a moment’s notice for weekend getaways to Hot Springs, Ark., and Branson, Mo., or just a quick shopping spree to Shreveport, La., or Longview.  Ledelle loved being surrounded by people, and people loved being around Ledelle. She commanded attention wherever she went, and thrived off of human interaction. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Atlanta, an  officer in the Bethel Sunday School class, and a regular at the Faithful Doers and the Thursday morning Bible study. Rarely a week passed that she could not be found filling a seat at Wednesday night prayer meeting. Her faith was unfailing and unflappable, despite her burdens in life. She believed with a childlike innocence and acceptance. Ledelle is preceded in death by her parents, Fannie and Wilson; her daughter, Martha; her sister Estelle Carter Steger Stoker; her husband, Kenneth; and her brother Aubrey Wilson Carter.  She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Thompson Ransom Cochran; granddaughter Jennifer Ransom Rice and her husband, Chuck; grandson Travis Ransom and wife Emily; and great-grandson Jay Coyt Ransom.  Services were held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13, at a First Baptist Church in Atlanta, with the Rev. Joe W. Srygley by officiating. The Rev. Wes Chambers of First Baptist Church in Atlanta also presided, along with longtime family friend, the Rev. Bob Logan.  Internment followed at Queen City Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Atlanta, the Juvenile Diabetes Fund or a charity of your choice.  Hanner Funeral Services handled the arrangements.  An on-line guestbook may be signed at www.ahnnerfuneralservices.com.
