HAZEL MARIE "LAW" THOMAS
Hazel Marie "Law" Thomas departed this life on Thursday, March 3, 2005. She lacked one week being 91 years old. Hazel was born in Bivins on March 10, 1941 to William Henry Law and Cadda Ann "Heath" Law. Thomas's mother Cadda was born in Cicero Heath and Ellen "Mad-Ox" Heath on September 24, 1882. Ellen was the daughter of Indian Chief "Mad-Ox" of the Caddo Indian Tribe, a "family legend." Cicero and Ellen named their last daughter "Cadda" after the Caddo Indians. Thomas' grandfather, Cicero Heath, ws the first person to be baptized into the Bethsaida "Y" Baptist Church in 1878. Thomas's father, William Henry Laws grandparents, were George and Martha Law, who were the founders of the Laws Chapel Methodist Church in Atlanta, Cass County, in 1853. Laws Chapel is now a noted Texas landmark. Thomas was the sixth child born to William and Cadda and out of the eight children, she was their only daughter. Thomas's dad passed away March 8, 1923 when she was only nine years old. Her mother was left to raise eight children alone. Thomas and her mom worked together side-by-side in the home and in the fields to keep the family together and food on the table. It was a very hard time for the family. Cadda remained a single mom until her death Jan. 9, 1968. She was 86 years old. Thomas is not only preceded in death by her loving parents, but also by all seven brothers, Mancel Law, Patrick Law, Roy Law, Claude Law, Ted Law, Cecil Law and James Law. Even though Hazel lived in the Pasadena/Houston area for years, her mind, thoughts, and her heart ached for family and friends in Cass County, but Cass County never left her! With all her feisty, fiery, strong will, strong mind, and independent Indian blood in her she could get on a war path from time to time. But as the old saying goes, blood is thicker than water and now she can be in Cass County Heaven with her parents and brothers in peace and harmony. Thomas is survived by her only child, Patsy Thomas Stiehl and husband, Edward; two grandsons, Michael and John Kelly of Pasadena; one granddaughter, Natalie Nicole Stiehl of Pasadena; one great-grandson, Kolton A. Brothers of Port Lavaca, and a very special friend, Sheri Johns. Thomas will be buried at Bethsaida "Y" Cemetery. (pd)

WILLIAM RALPH CAVER Oct. 11, 1932 – Apr. 9, 2005
William Ralph Caver passed away last Saturday, Apr. 9, at his home in Texarkana. He was instrumental in the cultural development of Texarkana through his work not only as a local artist but also as a teacher at the Texarkana College and East Texas State University. Caver inspired his students to appreciate art as a part of everyday life and look for beauty in unexpected places. Many of his students now work in the arts. He retired from teaching in 1993. He was also active in the Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council (TRAHC) and Texarkana Historical Museum. Caver was a prolific artist and his work includes painting, sculpture, ceramics and weaving. He was an inspiration for not only his students but all those who were close to him. Although he fought a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease he was able to continue to express himself through his paintings. TRAHC honored him last June in a retrospective exhibition of 50 years of work entitled “Ralpf Caver: Artist and Teacher.” Caver was a loving, adoring husband, father and friend. He always found time to spent with those whom he most loved. He had a quick wit and found humor in all aspects of life. He was truly able to connect with anyone on some level and will be dearly missed. He was born in Longview on Oct. 11, 1932 and was raised in Atlanta as the youngest of three brothers. He was nicknamed “Sonny” by his family. He went to North Texas State University, Majored in art and began teaching in public schools in Dallas. Caver married Katy Franklin Caver in 1962 and they moved to southern France. He later completed an MFA degree in San Miguel, Mexico. Travel and learning about new cultures brought him joy; during his lifetime Ralph lived abroad in Germany, France, Mexico and Spain before settling in Texarkana.
