LOYCE DURMON           March 4, 1936 – Aug. 8, 2004

Graveside services for Loyce Durmon, 68, of Atlanta were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug 11 at Courtland Cemetery with the Rev. LeRoy Howell officiating.  Interment followed under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service.

Durmon was born in Cass County.  He worked for Morton-Thiokol for 37 years in the labs. He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty McCoy. Survivors include one daughter, Jacquelyn Williams of Atlanta; one brother, Lelon Durmon of Queen City; one sister, Floyce McKinley of Queen City; two grandchildren, Kathryn Steward and husband, Thomas and Will Williams; and two great-grandchildren, Thomas and Lilly Steward. Graveside services for Ben Campbell, 30, of Atlanta were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13 at Fellowship Cemetery in Dubach, La., with Dr. Michael Hawley officiating.  Interment followe4d under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service.

Campbell was born in Ruston, La.  He attended First Baptist Church in Atlanta. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bobby G. and Sara Campbell and one brother, Don Campbell. Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Jay Tidwell of Atlanta; one sister-in-law, Lisa Campbell Gibbs of Monroe, La.; and six nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Atlanta, the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home or to the charity of choice. Funeral services for Beulah Jones, 86, of Hughes Springs were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13.  Reeder-Davis Funeral Home handled the arrangements.  

  JENNIE J. JONES    

Mrs. Jones was born March 5, 1914 in Delta County to Watler R. and Mary Thurmond Jenkins and departed this world on Aug. 11 at Atlanta Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. Mrs. Jones was a resident of Atlanta since 1957.  She and her husband Howell Jones owned and operated Jones Grocery and Service Station on the Linden highway in Atlanta for over 20 years.  The last seven years of her life she was a resident of Rose Haven Retreat in Atlanta. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howell Jones, whom she married in 1957, who passed away June 22, 1990. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug 13 at Oaklawn Cemetery in Cooper. Mrs. Jones is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jack H. and Betty Armstrong of Galveston; three grandchildren, Bob Armstrong and wife, Lisa of Coppell, Steven Armstrong and Stacy Walsh, both of Galveston; one niece, Gloria Matthews and husband, Jerry of Cooper and six great-grandchildren. The family wishes to express its gratitude to Dr. James Morris and the staff of Atlanta Memorial Hospital and Rose Haven Retreat for the many years of concern and care of Mrs. Jones. (pd)    

FRANCES R. SMITHEN    

Services for Frances R. Smithen, 79, of Denison were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7 at Bratcher Funeral Chapel in Denison.  She died Thursday, Aug. 5 at Texoma Medical Center. The Rev. Stephen Pyle and the Rev. Mark Mitchell officiated, followed by burial at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Bratcher Funeral Home. Smithen was born on Oct. 12, 1924 in Texarkana, daughter of James Landon and Era Allen Riley. She graduated from East Texas State University in Commerce.  On Aug. 7, 1948, she married John K. Smithen in Cass County.  He preceded her in death on March 2, 2001. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Denison.  She served as a County Home Demonstration agent and substitute teacher, in addition to being a homemaker. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, John and Jeanne Smithen of Denison; two daughters, Nancy Smithen and Anne Smithen, both of Lewisville; two grandchildren, Chad Cariat of Fort Worth and Riley Smithen of Denison; two sisters, Helen Riley of Queen City and Jane Studebaker of Raymondville; one brother, James L.   Services were held on Wednesday, July 29 in Oroville, Calif., for Rose Mary Patten Bumgardner, formerly of Bright Star, Ark. Rose Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Bumgardner; her parents, D.W. and Effie Patten; two brothers, J. W. Patten and James L. Pattern; and two sisters, Beatrice Patten and Frances Patten Malone. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Jay Tucker of California; one son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Sue Bumgardner of California; one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Jimmy Brown of Bloomburg; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. COY HARPER             May 29, 1916 - Aug. 16, 2004    

Funeral services for Coy Harper, 88, of Atlanta were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18 at Laws Chapel Methodist Church in Atlanta with the Rev. Gloria Jennings and the Rev. Dale Vickers officiating. Interment followed in the Laws Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service.  Harper attended Laws Chapel Methodist Church where he also led the choir for several years.  He sang with the Henshaw Quartet for 17 years.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II.  He landed on Omaha Beach and received a Purple Heat for being injured in France.  He was a retired television repairman.  Harper was preceded in death by four sisters.  Survivors include his wife, Zelma Harper of Atlanta; one brother, Reed Harper of Atlanta; nine nieces, Willa Dean Hawthorn of Atlanta, Homerzelle Markos of Queen City, Sara Sue Thomas of Uvalde, Betty Sue Watkins of Atlanta, Rebecca McAlexander of Wake Village, Linda Baker of Atlanta, Anna Lee Ruby of Beaumont, Mary Jean Brehm of Caldwell and Edwina Hubbard of Texarkana; five great-nephews; and nine great-nieces.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Laws Chapel Church, 2130 Farm to Market 995, Atlanta, Texas 75551.  Condolences may be sent to www.hannerfuneralservice.com. ROXIE MAE SPENCER

 

Private memorial services for Roxie Mae Spencer, 86, will be held at a later date.  She passed away Friday, Aug. 20 in a Longview nursing facility.  Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview.

 Spencer was born Nov. 4, 1917 in Maud to Odie James and Lillie Mae Shaver.  She moved to Longview from Atlanta where she had been a resident for 25 years.  She also lived in Dallas and was a circuit board supervisor for Texas Instruments for 10 years.  Spencer was also a former resident of Maud and Texarkana.  She was an avid gardener and loved animals, especially cats, and was a Baptist.

 Spencer was preceded in death by her parents.

 Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Shirley Spencer and William Sydney Bratton of Longview; one granddaughter, Dr. Sherilyn Emberton of Longview; one grandson, Keith Emberton and his wife, Tonya of Fayetteville, Ga.; three great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Grant and Cole Emberton; three sisters and one brother-in-law; Doris and George Haggard of Naples, Dona B. Stewart of Atlanta and Audrey Stover of Texarkana; two nieces, Barbara McCoy of Atlanta and Brenda Moon of Texarkana; and four nephews, Mark Stewart and Mitchell Haggard, both of Atlanta, Dale Haggard of Abilene and Keith Haggard of Albuquerque, N.M.

 Funeral services for Herschel Elliott, 80, of Atlanta were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24 at Hanner Funeral Chapel in Atlanta with the Rev. Chris Cowan officiating.  Interment followed in the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Marietta under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service.

 Elliott was born in Marietta and was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church.

 He was preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Amanda Elliott, two sisters and one brother.

 Survivors include two sisters, Marian Cobb of Atlanta and Winnie Smith of Richardson and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

ROBERT JOSEPH ANTHONY  

  Robert Joseph Anthony, 82, died Wednesday, July 29 at his home in Midlothian.  He was a 1939 graduate of Bloomburg High School.  Born in Texas, he was the son of the late Thomas Anthony and Fay Endsley Anthony, and the widower of Eileen Donovan Anthony.  A funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3 at St. Gabriel’s in Virginia.  He was a retired lieutenant colonel of the United States Marine Corps, having served 30 years.  After his military career, he worked for First Interstate Bank as a vice president, until his retirement in 1987.  He and his wife were active members of St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church in Anaheim, Calif.  He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in California and served as Grand Knight in 1975-76.  When he moved to Virginia, he became a charter member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church.  He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Robert John Thomas Anthony, and his brother, Kenneth Anthony.  He is survived by his son, Alan Joseph Anthony of Chesterfield, Va.; three sisters, Helen Anthony Pyle and Hershey Anthony Thompson, both of Bloomburg, and Jerry Anthony Turner of Waskom; one sister-in-law, Charlotte Anthony of Shreveport, La.; two grandsons, Robert Craig Anthony of Colorado and Michael Stephen Anthony of Arkansas; two granddaughters, Theresa Renee Anthony of North Carolina and Alana Faye Anthony of Virginia; one great-granddaughter, Andrea Morgan Anthony; and one great-grandson, Bradley Conner Anthony, both of Colorado.

LELA HUGHES DAVIS                               Aug 30, 1913 – Sept 1, 2003

  Funeral services for Lela Hughes Davis, 91, of Carthage will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4 at Jimerson Funeral Home Chapel.  Interment will follow at Huffines Cemetery south of Atlanta at 4 p.m. Saturday.  Buddy Bankhead and Mark Sloan will officiate.  Mrs. Davis passed away Wednesday, Sept. 1 t her home with her family by her side.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Jimerson Funeral Home.

She was born Lela Verna Hughes in Cass.  She was the daughter of William Robert and Mamie Pillow Hughes.  Mrs. Davis was a dedicated homemaker and devoted mother.  She had lived in Carthage since 1954.  Mrs. Davis never met a stranger and always had a smile for anyone she met in passing.  She was a member of Carthage Church of Christ and took great pride in taking her famous chicken and dressing to all the church fellowship function.  She will be deeply missed by her family and numerous friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sidney S. Davis; two sons, Robert Davis and Ted Davis; one granddaughter, Judy Lynch Lesmen; one daughter-in-law, Vicki Armstrong Davis; one granddaughter-in-law, Sheri Lynch; three sisters and two brothers.

Loving survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Gene Lynch of Huffines, Shirley and Harold Denman of Tyler, Linda and Jim Mims of Lindale and Dixie and Tommy Boothe of Carthage; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Larry and Jerrie Davis of Carthage, Randy Davis of Tyler and Jan Davis of El Paso; two brothers, Dale Hughes of Denton and Neal Hughes of Atlanta; one sister, Ruby Lawhon of Mount Pleasant; 20 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews. Clements was born in Cass County and was a member of Queen City United Methodist Church.

Webb of Stowe, Ohio; two sisters, Jo Frieberger of Atlanta and Opal Hill of Texarkana; five grandchildren, Teresa Tiffin of Pisgah, Ala., Dennis Stalcup and Lisa McComack, both of Dallas and Curtis Ronald Clements and Anita McDonald, both of Quinlan; five great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

JAMES W. DAUGHERTY                              Jan. 28, 1947 – Sept. 6, 2004

 

Graveside services with military honors for James W. Daugherty, 57, of Hooks were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10 at Chapelwood Memorial Gardens in Nash with the Rev. Ron Rinnert officiating.  Services were held under the direction of Bates-Rolf Funeral Home of New Boston.

Daugherty was born in Evansville, Ind.  He was retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years of service, including three tours in Vietnam (Can Tho, Cam Ranh Bay, and Nha Trang).  He also served three tours in Germany.  He was employed as a security guard at Red River Army Depot.

James was a loving husband, son, father, brother and grandfather.  He will be missed by his wife, Thach Daugherty of Hooks; his parents, Wavie and Irene Daugherty of Evansville; one son and daughter-in-law, Lance and Tara Daugherty of Atlanta, one daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Tracy Hout of Fort Huachuca, Ariz.; one brother, Daniel Daugherty of Gentryville, Ind.; three sisters, Karen Mitchell and Thonda Daugherty, both of Lincoln City, Inc., and Linda Rodgers of Robinson, Ill.; grandchildren, Boomer and Hunter Daugherty and Brandi and Kasey Hout.  He will also be missed by two special pets, Max and Cody. Funeral services for Barbara Hyabek Kynnysm 65, of White Oak were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10 at Croley Funeral Home Chapel in Gladewater with Phillip Hancock officiating.  Interment followed in Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Longview under the direction of Croley Funeral Home.

Lummus was born in Gilmer and was a retired bus driver for the Gregg County Co-op.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Harvey and Alma Bouknight; one sister, Nelda Kate Bouknight; and one brother, William Durwood Bouknight.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Joe Lummus of White Oak; one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Steve Sweeney of East Mountain; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Brad and Lisa Lummus of Kilgore and Douglas Lummus of White Oak; one adopted daughter, Jessica Petter of LaPorte; four grandchildren, Matthew Sweeney, Brandon Lummus, Joshua Lummus and Mason Morehead; two sisters, Ruth Boles of Longview and Cullie Hancock Trumble of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Barbara Birmingham Johnson, 67, of Asheville, N.C., died on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at Mission Hospital in Asheville.  She was the daughter of the late Clark Birmingham and Nettie Birmingham Brown and the step-daughter of the late John Brown, all of Atlanta.  She was born in Atlanta and graduated from Atlanta High School.  Survivors include her husband of 50 years, James Johnson of Asheville; two sons, James and Douglas, both of Florida; one daughter, Susan, of Asheville; four grandchildren; and one brother and sister-in-law, Neal and Joan Birmingham of Atlanta.  Her brother has shipped a container of soil from her old homeplace on William Street in Atlanta to her husband who will add the soil to her gravesite in Asheville to satisfy her request that she be buried beneath the soil of Atlanta.  In lieu of flowers, her family has requested that dontaions be made to the Parkinson Foundation in her memory. Charles Louis Hughes, DDS died Monday, Nov. 29 in Austin.  He is survived by his wife, Cora Lee Petty Hughes; son and daughter-in-law, John Wilmer and Heather Kay McKenzie Hughes and their daughters, Kathryn Elizabeth and Helen Rose; son and daughter-in-law Louis Roy and Ann Griffith Hughes and their children, Martha Elizabeth, children, Martha Elizabeth, Jane Ann and William Louis.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Wilmer Hall Hughes and Elizabeth Albright Hughes.  Charles was born in Texarkana, Ark., and after five days moved to Atlanta where he grew up in his father's family home.  He graduated from Atlanta High School in 1951.  He attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated from the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston.  He served as a captain in the United State Air Force.  He attended the University of Missouri at Kansas City w
