Martin was a charter member of the Cass County Genealogical Society when it formed in 1972 and served as president in 1981 and 1982. Under her leadership and with her able assistance, the society published the "History of Cass County People" in 1982.
She joined the Benjamin McFarland Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in New Boston in 1964. After years of commuting to DAR meetings, Mrs. Martin, in 1975, was appointed by the National Society to be the organizing regent to establish the new Trammel's Trace DAR chapter in Atlanta. She served the chapter in many other offices through the years.
Mrs. Martin was a member of Atlanta Chapter No 151 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She served as worthy matron in 1945-46 and was honored with life membership in 1986.
Even while serving these organizations, her family, their business and the church, Mrs. Martin found time to write and publish two books on her family history, tracing their roots in North Carolina from American Revolutionary War veteran Capt. Moses Guest and Kedar Biggs.
Of her life-long passion for genealogy, Mrs. Martin said she felt "the need to preserve records for coming generations, that others might know of those who helped colonize, pioneer, build and preserve this land of America.
"May you come to know these ancestors, learn to love and respect them for the lives they lived. "she wrote. Mrs. Martin was born in Santa Anna in West Texas to Neal Little Biggs and Lela Annis Smith Biggs. She married Clovis A. Martin in 1932.
Louise and Clovis moved to Atlanta in 1937. She opened a pie shop and bakery in Queen City in 1939 but moved the store to Atlanta in 1940 where she and Clovis ran a bakery, grocery and seed store for many years. Clovis was also a farm equipment dealer for several years.
Mrs. Martin sold the business after Clovis died. She then worked for Bunch Wholesale in Texarkana before retiring in 1987.
The Martins joined First Baptist Church in 1940 and after World War II built the family home on Pecan Street where she lived until moving to Austin because of declining health.
